What Is Motor Neuron Disease
Motor Neuron Diseases (MNDs)" are a group of progressive neurological disorders that destroy nerve cells. Normally, messages from nerve cells in the brain, known as upper motor neurons, are transmitted to nerve cells in the brain stem and spinal cord, known as lower motor neurons, and from there to specific muscles. These diseases selectively affect motor neurons, which are responsible for controlling voluntary muscle activities such as speaking, walking, breathing, swallowing, and general body movement.
Types Of MND
There are different forms of motor neuron diseases (MND)
ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) also called Lou Gehrig's which affects both upper and lower motor neurons. ALS is the most common form and accounts for approx. 60% to 70% of all cases.
PBP (progressive bulbar palsy) which affects the lower motor neurons of the brain stem, causing slurred speech and difficulty in chewing and swallowing. PBP accounts for about 20% of all cases.
PMA (progressive muscular atrophy) which affects only lower motor neurons in the spinal cord. PMA accounts for the remaining 10% of cases.
PLS (primary lateral sclerosis) which affects only lower motor neurons. PLS is a very rare form of MND. PLS, unlike the other forms, is not fatal. In some very rare cases, patients with PLS eventually have ALS.
Resulting Conditions & Treatment Of MND
Motor neuron disease is an exceptional neurological condition which affects the brain and cell in the nervous system. This problem ultimately leads to the degeneration of cells that form motor neurons. Motor neurons are responsible to give electrical signal to muscles with the help of brain and are entirely responsible for any movement in the human body. It may ultimately evolve to paralyse the body, shorten the life expectancy and the death.
Though we’re in an era where medical science is at best of its implementation yet there’s no answer to the question of treatment of MND. There had been a few advancements in the researches and it’s believed that MND can be treated which is suggested to be not only the most effective but the safest and most logical answer to this question of treatment of MND.
